5 Things That Happen After a Breakup

Breakups can be hard for everyone involved. You felt comfortable with your old partner, and it is difficult to adjust to life without him or her. After a breakup, you might be feeling a lot of confusing emotions from regret to sadness. You might even be surprised to find yourself relieved to no longer be in a relationship that wasn’t working.

The most important thing to remember after a breakup whether it was mutual or not is you’re not alone. Everyone experiences breaks in relationships sometimes, and these things are completely normal to experience. Here are five of the things that happen after a breakup.

  1. You don’t want to do anything.

After a bad breakup, you can be left feeling depressed and unable to do anything. One of the most common signs of depression is a loss of interest. You might find yourself struggling to find the motivation to do the things you usually do with ease. Getting out of bed possibly will become a struggle as you attempt to overcome this loss. Luckily, this depression is usually temporary and with time you will feel yourself returning to normal.

2. You face sudden regret.

Even if you initially felt relieved to end your relationship, it’s common to still wonder if you made a mistake. According to Ex Back Permanently, sometimes breakups can offer a much-needed shift in perspective which can leave you wanting your ex. Take time to reflect on the reason your relationship ended in the first place before rushing back into a negative relationship. Remember that while you might regret losing an important person in your life, that does not necessarily mean you are better off with him or her.

3.  You feel envious.

After a bad breakup the last thing you want to do is see other happy couples. Being around other couples and romance might make you feel even more lonely and depressed. You might begin to feel jealous of people in your life who are in successful relationships. Remind yourself in these moments that everyone experiences difficult relationships, and you aren’t the only one feeling heartbroken.

4. You hold on to old mementos.

It might start with you simply scrolling through texts. The next thing you know you’ve surrounded yourself with old memories of your lost love like forgotten sweaters and their favorite songs. Doing this will only make it harder to distance yourself from the past. Sometimes a clean break is the best thing you can do. It might be hard, but out of sight really is out of mind.

5. You check up on your ex.

Living in the age of social media makes it easier than ever to keep tabs on the important people in our lives. It can be tempting (or even addicting!) to check up on your ex’s social media profiles after a breakup. You just can’t keep yourself from seeing if he or she has moved on. These daily reminders of your failed relationship are only going to keep you from moving forward. The best thing to do is unfollow your ex, at least until you’ve healed.
